Lesson #55: The Future Form of होना honaa - To be

Can you remember back to Lesson #53 The Future Tense? In that lesson we started learning about the Future Tense in Hindi for example we learnt how to make sentences like…

image

मैं अख़बार पढ़ूँगी main akhbaar parhoongee
- I will read the newspaper (said by a female)

If you’re at all confused then head back to Lesson #53 and revise over it a little! Now in that lesson I mentioned that the verb होना honaa - ‘to be’ is irregular in the future tense so it doesn’t follow the usual rules! So in today’s lesson we’re going to learn how to change this verb into the future tense!

Now let me show you a few examples first and then hopefully you’ll get the idea - then we can see the rules in detail! So are you ready to get going? Let’s start with something we know first…

image

मैं दुकान पर हूँ main dukaan par hoon
- I am at the shop

This is just as we learnt in Lesson #22 yeah, it shouldn’t be anything new! Now to change this to the future tense, that is to say “I will be at the shop” we actually say…

मैं दुकान पर हूँगा main dukaan par hoongaa
- I will be at the shop (said by a male)

So what’s changed? Well look at the word at the end! This is where our new future form of होना honaa comes in! Right, one more example and then let’s look at the rules in detail! So again we know how to say…

image

वह UK में है voh UK men hai - He is in the UK

Again this is just stuff we already know! So how do we change this to the future tense then? Well we actually say…

वह UK में होगा voh UK men hogaa - He will be in the UK

Can you see what’s changed? That’s right, we’ve just replaced है hai, with होगा hogaa which changes the meaning from “He is…” to “He will be…”. Are you with me?

Do you think you’re ready to learn the proper rules and conjugations for the future form of होना honaa now then? Well here goes deep breathe…

The Masculine Forms;

मैं हूँगा             main hoongaa       I will be (by a male)

हम होंगे           ham honge           We will be

तू होगा            too hogaa            You will be (Very Informal)

आप होंगे            aap honge          You will be (Formal)

तुम होगे         tum hoge           You will be (Informal)

यह / वह होगा    yeh / voh hogaa   He / It will be

ये / वे होंगे       ye / ve honge     They will be

The Femine Forms;

मैं हूँगी             main hoongee       I will be (by a female)

हम होंगी           ham hongee           We will be

तू होगी            too hogee            You will be (Very Informal)

आप होंगी            aap hongee          You will be (Formal)

तुम होगी         tum hogee           You will be (Informal)

यह / वह होगी    yeh / voh hogee   She / It will be

ये / वे होंगी       ye / ve hongee     They will be

How was that? Read through it a few more times. Why not copy it out too, to make sure you remember it!

Now read back to our examples just above - can you see why we used the words that we did? Great! Ready for just a few more examples? Here goes! In each case make sure you can understand the sentence and the conjugation we use!

image

वे स्कूल पर होंगे ve skool par honge
- They will be at school

image

क्या आप घर पर होंगी? kyaa aap ghar par hongee?
- Will you be at home? (To a female)

How was that? Does it all make sense? We’re going to come back to this quite a few times more in future lessons, so it’s important to learn it well!

Why not try writing your own sentences using “will be” and leave them in the comments below and i’ll get back to you letting you know how well you’ve done!
