Lesson #29: I Love You
So last lesson, Lesson #28, we saw how to use Hindi verbs in the present tense. Today we’re going to apply that knowledge and learn how to say ‘I love you’ in Hindi. Now you’ll be able to impress your partner by saying I love you in Hindi!

So are you ready? Here goes…
मैं तुमसे प्यार करता हूँ
main tumse pyaar kartaa hoon
- I love you (Said by a male)
मैं तुमसे प्यार करती हूँ
main tumse pyaar kartee hoon
- I love you (Said by a female)

Notice that it changes depending on whether you are a male or a female!
What’s going on here then? Let’s have a closer look at the sentence. The word for love in Hindi, we’ll the one we’re using, is प्यार pyaar. This is a noun, the name of the emotion. But we want to use this as a verb, so we add करना karnaa to the end, meaning 'to do’. This word is featured a lot in what is known as compound verbs, usually, as in this example, composed of a noun and then करना karnaa. So we have the verb प्यार करना pyaar karnaa - to love, whose 'root’, as we learnt is; प्यार कर pyaar kar.
We also have the word तुमसे tumse. This translates as; to you, it’s a 'different form’ of the word तुम tum. The grammar rules of तुमसे tumse aren’t really relevant here, we’ll see it in detail later.
Now recapping Lesson #28, and putting this all together we have;

When spoken by a man;
मैं तुमसे प्यार करता हूँ
main tumse pyaar kartaa hoon
- I love you
And when spoken by a women;
मैं तुमसे प्यार करती हूँ
main tumse pyaar kartee hoon
- I love you
Word by word this literally translates to 'I (to) you love am’ - this might look like gibberish but that’s just what we say!
It’s really important to remember that this sentence changes depending on who it is spoken by (and not who it is spoken to)! Practice saying 'I love you’ in Hindi to your family and friends!
