Lesson #21: Handwriting

Can you remember when you first started to learn how to write as a child? Well, you probably can’t remember it because it was a long time ago, but I’m sure like every other child in the world your handwriting was a complete mess to begin with! Then, of course, with years of practice your handwriting got better and better.

So what does this have to do with Hindi? Well what most people don’t realise when they start learning a language is that to begin with your handwriting will just as messy as it was when you wrote English as a small child! It takes lots and lots of practice to get your Hindi handwriting to look neat.

Learning to write in Hindi is just like learning to write as a child - you need to practice!

I’d really recommend that you go through the Vowels Section and Consonants Section again and practice writing each letter several times! And (here’s the important bit) then try and write each letter from memory. Can you remember it without looking? If not then keep practicing!

This picture shows how to write the very first Hindi vowel a. The oder of the strokes isn’t that important to start with, you’ll soon get used to it! But remember that we always put in the top horizontal “washing line” at the end, after writing the whole word!

Remember to practice! Write down all the letters and words you know! And then do it again! You’re writing will still be like a child’s until you practice and practice!
