Lesson #20: What’s Your name?
Already we’ve learnt how to greet someone in Hindi and say Hello and How are you?. So what else do you think you’re going to want to say when you meet someone? What about asking; What’s your name? Well that’s what we’re going to cover today!

नमस्ते namaste means ‘hello’!
So are you ready to get straight into it? Great! To ask 'What’s your name?’ in Hindi we say…
आपका नाम क्या है?
aapkaa naam kyaa hai?
- What’s your name?
Click the play button just above to hear the phrase pronounced! Be sure to listen to it loads and loads of times so you can get your pronunciation perfect.
Woah, what do all these new words mean? Well, it’s probably easier if we leave that for the time being, we’ll be covered all the words in detail very soon so for now all you need to remember is आपका नाम क्या है? aapkaa naam kyaa hai? - What’s your name? Say it to yourself a few times. Got it?

If you practice saying this phrase to everyone you know you’ll remember it in no time at all!
Now, of course you’re going to want to know how to reply to this in Hindi! So are you ready to learn how to say 'My name is ___’. Great! All we say is…
मेरा नाम ___ है
meraa naam ____ hai
My name is ____.
Again click the play button above to hear the phrase pronounced! And you obviously put your name in the blank! So for example, if your name is सुरेश Suresh you would say मेरा नाम सुरेश है meraa naam suresh hai - My name is Suresh. Both a male and a female say it exactly like this - there is no change for gender!
Now I want you to say it with your name, ready? मेरा नाम ___ है meraa naam ___ hai - My name is ___. See, it’s so easy!
Again, don’t worry too much about the words you don’t know, we’ll be covering them soon!
Practice saying these two phrases as much as you can. Every time you meet one of your friends (whether they know Hindi or not!) ask them their name in Hindi and then reply!
