Lesson #112: The Loyal Mongoose

Today we’re going to do some more Hindi listening practice with a great little Hindi story I’ve found! Remember that whatever your level of Hindi you might be at, listening to the language being spoken in real life situations is simply one of the best ways to practice and to improve your understanding!

The most important thing with this exercise is to just listen, absorb the Hindi and see if you can spot any words you recognise. It’s really not important to understand every single word, so please don’t get bogged down trying to translate everything you don’t know - just listen and see what you do know.

The story I’ve got for you is called ईमानदार नेवला eemaandaar nevlaa - The Loyal Mongoose. The story is about… well actually I’ll leave that to you to try and figure out as you watch it! Anyway, that’s enough talk from me, so let’s get straight to it. The story is just less than five minutes long, so get watching…

Just click on the video above to start it! With thanks to the fantastic Appu Series. If you have any problems watching this video then click here to watch it directly on Youtube.

How was that? How much did you understand? Did you manage to recognise some Hindi words? Can you follow the story? To help you along here’s a few words that might be useful…

       गाँव gaanv - Village (M)          किसान kisaan - Farmer (M)

       पत्नी patnee - Wife (F)           शिशु shishu - Baby (M)

       मिला milaa - Met                    कहा kahaa - Said

       देखा dekhaa - Saw                  भागी bhaagee - Ran

       शांत  shaant - Calm / Peace      लौटा lautaa - Returned

Now I want you to watch it again, so go back to the start and watch it all the way through once more! See if you can pick up the words we’ve just learnt! How much did you understand this time? Hopefully a little more than the first time. In fact I bet that each new time you watch it you’ll pick up more than before!

Now finally here’s a few whole sentences and phrases that I want you to see if you can recognise! So go back, watch it once more and see if you can pick them up as go along!

वे तीनों बड़ी ख़ुश थे ve teenon baree khush the
- All three of them were very happy.

जब वह घर पहुँचा jab voh ghar pahuncaa
- When he arrived home.

देखो मैं क्या लाया हूँ dekho main kyaa laayaa hoon
- Look what I have brought.

किसान को दूसरा कोई काम नहीं था
kisaan ko doosraa koee kaam naheen thaa
- The farmer had no other work.

तुमने इतनी जल्दी ऐसा क्यों किया?
tumne itnee jaldee aisaa kyon kiyaa
- Why did you do it so quickly?

Did you manage to spot all those sentences in the video? Be sure to watch it a few more time if you didn’t! Do you understand the story now? Have you figured out what the moral is? Feel free to leave a comment just below if you have any questions or if you’re confused about any part of the story!
