Lesson #99: आती क्या खंडाला Aati Kya Khandala

Right the way back in Lesson #31 I spoke about just how incredibly useful, important and (most importantly) fun Bollywood can be when learning Hindi. Today I thought we’d actually put this into practice and hopefully brush up our Hindi a little by working with a incredibly simple, popular and catchy Bollywood song! Perhaps we’ll even do something singing and dancing too! So are you ready to get going?

A poster for the film Ghulam

The song we’re going to look at today is called आती क्या खंडाला aati kyaa khandaalaa which translates to “Will you come to Khandala?”. It’s taken from the 1998 film Ghulam. This film sees (in a complete typical Bollywood way) Siddharth, played by Aamir Khan, falls in love with the Alisha, played by Rani Mukerji. In the song Siddharth is trying to convince Alisha to come to Khandala with him. I hope that’s give you a little background for those who haven’t seen the film before! So are you ready to hear the song now?

Click the play button on the video to watch the song! If you have any difficulties in getting the video above to work properly then you can watch it directly on youtube by clicking here

So how was that? Did you find yourself singing along? It’s such a catchy song! Be sure to watch out for the great dancing moves! Watch it once more, but this time see if you can figure out what they’re saying. How much of it can you understand? Hopefully you’ll managed to pick up a few of the words!

I’m going to give you lyrics to the main part of the song in Hindi so I want you to listen to it once more and see if you can follow along…

ए, क्या बोलती तू?   e, kyaa boltee too?
ए, क्या मैं बोलूँ?   e, kyaa main boloon?
सुन   sun
सुना   sunaa
आती क्या खंडाला?   aatee kyaa khandaalaa?
क्या करूँ, आके मैं खंडाला?   kyaa karoon, aake main khandaalaa?
घूमेंगे, फिरेंगे, नाचेंगे, गाएँगे,  ऐश करेंगे और क्या   ghoomenge, phirenge, naachenge, gaaenge aish karenge aur kyaa

Did you manage to follow along? You might find it difficult to follow at first, because it is quite fast, especially the last line! But after hearing it a few times you should be able to keep up! Feel free to sing along too, that will only help your Hindi pronunciation!

How much of this can you understand? Don’t worry if it’s not very much, it is a little tricky. Try and think to yourself for a few minutes about a the translation first before reading though a translation below!

Hey, what do you say?
Hey, what can I say?
Listen!
Speak!
Will you go to Khandala?
What will I do after I come to Khandala?
We’ll roam, we’ll move, we’ll dance, we’ll sing, we’ll live a life of pleasure. What else?

Don’t worry to much about the translation too much, it’s more important for you to just listen and enjoy the song! Personally I think the English translation ruins the song a little, it sounds much better in Hindi! So I hope you’ve enjoyed today’s lesson. As I said earlier, don’t be afraid to sing along with the song! Who says that learning can’t be fun hey? I’ll try and cover another popular song like this some time soon!
