Lesson #94: Remember ने ne?
It was quite a while ago now that I introduced you to the little confusing Hindi word ने ne. Can you remember why we use ने ne? That’s right, in Past Tense sentences for Transitive Verbs we use the word ने ne right after the ‘subject’ to tell us 'who did the action’. Wow, that was a mouthful. Confused? Don’t worry if you are because honestly ने ne is one of the trickiest parts of Hindi grammar, you will get there eventually!
It was back in Lesson #83 the we first met ने ne and I told you all about it. Then in Lesson #87 we saw a load of examples. So please read back over those lessons again if you want to refresh your memory!

Unfortunately for us Hindi learners though there’s one more little tiny thing we need to learn about ने ne - and that is how it changes a few of the Hindi pronouns! If you’ve forgotten what pronouns are then remember they’re words like I, he, she, they etc. And if you’re forgot Hindi pronouns then head back to Lesson #15!
Phew! Anyway, are you ready to learn how ने ne changes pronouns? अच्छा acchaa - great!
Ok so firstly I have the good news! Most Hindi pronouns don’t change at all when we use ने ne. In fact all of these don’t change; मैं main - I, हम ham - We, तू too - You (Intimate), आप aap - You (Formal) , तुम tum - You (Informal).
So for example…

तुमने छोटी किताब पढ़ी
tumne chotee kitaab parhee
- You read a small book.
Can you see that the word तुम tum - 'You’ stays exactly the same.
And the not so good news? The Hindi words for 'He’, 'She’ and 'They’ change a little when we add ने ne. But it’s so easy to understand!
यह yeh - He, She, It (Close) becomes - इसने isne
ये ye - They (Close) becomes - इन्होंने inhonne
वह voh - He, She, It (Far) becomes - उसने usne
वे ve - They (Far) becomes - उन्होंने unhonne
Let me give you a few examples….

उन्होंने अच्छी फ़िल्म देखी
unhonne acchee film dekhee
- They saw a good film

इसने दो आम खाए
isne do aam khaae
- He (or she) ate two mangoes

उसने नया ताला पाया
usne nayaa taalaa paayaa
- He (or she) found a new lock
Can you see? It’s really nothing too difficult! It’s actually been a really easy lesson, don’t you think? I just wanted to use this lesson to recap ने ne with you and to teach you a little something new! Try and practice by writing your own Past Tense sentences!
