Lesson #93: Popeye in Hindi!
Whatever your level of Hindi, whether you’re a absolute beginner or nearly completely fluent, practicing your listening skills by listening to real life Hindi is always incredibly useful. In fact it’s usually pretty good fun too! So today we’re going to practice our Hindi listening skills by watching an episode of Popeye that’s been dubbed into Hindi. I’m sure you all know who Popeye is!
Now let me stress something for you, the important thing is for you to watch the video and listen out for words or sentences you know and recognise. It is not important that you understand every single thing thats spoken. I want you to listen and try and pick out anything you know, I do not want you to get stressed if there’s something you don’t understand. Got it? Anyway, ready for the video? It’s only 5 minutes long so get watching!
If you’re having any problems watching the video on this page then you can watch it directly on youtube by clicking here. With thanks to Youtube user Ellahio for uploading.
How was that? How much did you understand? Watch it again! How much did you understand this time? Watch it once more! Can you follow the story? If you are having trouble understanding the story line then feel free to watch the English version of the same episode on youtube here - but be warned that often the translation doesn’t quite match 100%.
Now I want you to watch it once more for me, but this time I want you to listen out for these phrases in the video…
मेरी प्यारी छात्रा meree pyaaree chaatraa - My lovely (female) student.
मैं पढ़ना चाहुँगा main parhnaa caahoongaa - I want to learn.
तुम बहुत ख़राब हो tum bahut kharaab ho - You are very bad.
यह क्या हो रहा है? yeh kyaa ho rahaa hai - What is happening?
And finally, a word that should come straight into your mind when you think of Popeye - spinach! (I’ll give you a clue with this one, it’s not said till right at the very end!)

पालक paalak - Spinach
How many of the phrases and words above can you spot? Can you get them all? If so then well done!
Again I stress, it’s important to practice your listening skills by trying to hear words you know. It’s not important to understand every single word! And I guess that’s it for today.
If you’re looking for something else like this then a while ago I posted a video of a Hindi story about an Elephant and then I covered some of the sentences in it so please check it out!
