Lesson #130: How To Lose A Shoe
We’ve seen quite a few Hindi videos and stories on this site so far, they can be a really fun way to learn and brush up on your Hindi skills, don’t you think? You can find all the ones we’ve already covered under Videos and Stories in Beginner’s Grammar.
Anyway today we’re going to look at another Hindi cartoon story. This one is based on a true story from the life of Kiran Bedi. You may have already heard of her actually, she’s a very famous Indian social activist.
So are you ready for it? The story’s only five minutes long so you’ve really got no excuse to not watch it! Remember, as I’ve always said, don’t worry about trying to understand every single word, just relax and watch it through to start with! So here goes…

Phew! How was that? Don’t worry if it didn’t make much sense, this story is quite a bit more complicated than ones we’ve seen before. Now watch it through again and see if it makes more sense this time. Can you pick out words, or even whole sentences, that you understand? Can you follow the key points of the story? Use the pictures to help you!
To give you a little helping hand here’s some words that you might not know…

सफ़र करना safar karnaa - To travel
चारों ओर caaron or - Around
अजीब नज़रों से ajeeb nazron se - With strange looks
महिला mahilaa - Woman
अचानक acaanak - Suddenly
मारने लगना maarne lagnaa - To hit
चिल्लाना cillaanaa - To shout
गड़बड़ garbar - Confusion
बाल baal - Hair
लड़कों जैसे larkon jaise - Boylike
यकीन yakeen - Believe
धकेलना dhakelnaa - To Push
कसकर kaskar - Tightly
पकड़ लेना pakar lenaa - To Grab
Phew! Watch it through once more and see if you can find all of the above words, if you struggle to hear the words then try spotting them in the subtitles! Does it make more sense now? Can you understand the story? As I said before don’t worry if you can’t, it’s more about practicing listening to real life Hindi rather than trying to understand every word in the video!
