Lesson #129: The Future Continuous Tense
Right the way back in Lesson #35 we learnt all about the Present Continuous Tense in Hindi, can you remember back that far? Let’s have a quick refresh incase you’ve forgotten anything! Remember the Present Continuous Tense is sentences that say “someone is doing something” and so for example, how would we say “I am reading a book” in Hindi? That’s right we’d say…

मैं किताब पढ़ रहा हूँ
main kitaab parh rahaa hoon
- I am reading a book (said by a male)
If you’re lost, or feel like you can’t remember this then simply head on back to Lesson #35 and have a read through of the lesson again and then come back here!
Now today we’re going to use this to learn about the Future Continuous Tense. So are you ready to get going with it? Well here goes…
Firstly then, what is the Future Continuous Tense? Well it’s easier than it sounds, it’s just like the Present Continuous Tense but instead of saying “someone is doing something” we say “someone will be doing something”, can you see the difference?
Remember that we learnt how to say “will be” back in Lesson #55, when we saw the future form of होना honaa. Be sure to head back to that lesson if you can’t remember!
Do you think you’re ready to see a few examples then? We know how to say “She is eating” in Hindi, that’s right it’s just…

वह खा रही है voh khaa rahee hai
- She is eating
This is just the Present Continuous Tense as we’ve already know. So to change this into the Future Continuous Tense, and say “she will be eating” we actually say…
वह खा रही होगी voh khaa rahee hogee
- She will be eating
So what’s happened here? Well the only difference is that we’ve dropped the है hai (which means “is”) and we’ve added होगी hogee (which means “will be” as we saw in Lesson #55), I mean how easy is that! Ready to see another example then?

मैं संगीत सुन रही हूँ
main sangeet sun rahee hoon
- I am listening to music (said by a female)
Remember that संगीत sangeet is “music”, and सुनना sunnaa is “to listen”. This above sentence you should already understand! So how would we change it into the Future Continuous Tense and say "I will be listening to music" well it’s simply…
मैं संगीत सुन रही हूँगी
main sangeet sun rahee hoongee
- I will be listening to music
Can you see what’s happened here? We’ve just added हूँगी hoongee - will be, as we learnt in Lesson #55!
Do you think you’re getting the hang of how to make Future Continuous sentence now? Remember it’s just exactly the same as the Present Continuous Tense, but we drop the “is”/“are” from the end and add “will be” (as we saw in Lesson #55). Let’s see a few more examples, make sure you read through them a few times so you understand what’s happening in each sentence!

मैं कपरे धो रहा हूँगा
main kapre dho rahaa hoongaa
- I will be washing the clothes (said by a male)

वे यहाँ नहीं सो रहे होंगे
ve yahaan naheen so rahe honge
- They will not be sleeping here

क्या आप पार्टी आ रहे होंगे?
kyaa aap paartee aa rahe honge?
- Will you be coming to the party?
Remember in this last example that adding क्या kyaa to the start of the sentence turns it into a question!
Do you think you now understand the Future Continuous Tense? Hopefully you do! Try reading over the lesson once more and then translating the sentences just below to test your understanding…
- He will be eating
- Will you be going?
- They will not be drinking
- I will be reading a big old book (Remember पुराना puraanaa - old)
- Will she be watching TV tomorrow?
