Lesson #67: Practice with Adjectives!
All the way back in Lesson #44 we learnt about Adjectives in Hindi. Adjectives are ‘describing words’ I admit that and they can be quite difficult to use correctly since adjectives in Hindi always have to agree with the noun they describe! Today we’re going to see a whole load of examples of adjectives in sentences starting from the most basic and working our way up to more complicated examples.
We’ll first make sentences using the feminine noun किताब kitaab - book, then we’ll use the masculine noun पलंग palang - Bed and then finally we’ll use the feminine noun मछली machlee - fish. Hopefully you should see and understand how the sentences build up!

यह किताब मोटी है और… वह किताब पतली है
yeh kitaab motee hai aur… voh kitaab patlee hai
This book is fat and… that book is thin.

पतली किताब मेज़ पर है
patlee kitaab mez par hai
- The thin book is on the desk.
Are you ready for a even more complex sentence? Here goes
मैं अपनी मोटी हरी किताब मेज़ पर पढ़ रहा हूँ।
main apnee motee haree kitaab mez par parh rahaa hoon.
I am reading my fat green book on (or at) the desk.
(Said by a male, a female would say रही rahee instead of रहा rahaa ).
Now for our next example we’re going to look at the word पलंग palang - Bed
यह पलंग छोटा है और… वह पलंग लंबा है
yeh palang chotaa hai aur…. voh palang lambaa hai.
This bed is small and… that bed is big.
वह अपने लाल छोटे पलंग में सोती है
voh apne laal chote palang men sotee hai
- She sleeps in her own red small bed.
Notice here how we must use the oblique case of the adjectives - छोटा पलंग chotaa palang - “the small bed” changes to छोटे पलंग में chote palang men - “in the small bed”. Can you see the difference? Ready for the last example?

यह मछली नीली है और… वह मछली पीली है
yeh machlee neelee hai aur…. voh machlee peelee hai
This fish is blue and…. That fish is yellow.

नीली मछली नदी में है
neelee machlee nadee men hai
- The blue fish is in the river.
And finally one mega complex sentence…
तीन नीली मछलियाँ ठंडी नदी में तैरती हैं
teen neelee machliyaan thandee nadee men tairtee hain
Three blue fish swim in the cold river.
We’ve seen a lot of complicated examples in the lesson, so don’t be put off if it seems difficult to you. Try and read through each example several times so that you can understand the grammar rules. Try creating your own complicated sentences in Hindi full of descriptive adjectives!
