This is the letter ऋ ṛi. What does it look like? Well this one’s a little tricky, but it I’d say it looks like a T with three arms, two on the left and a big evil hook in his right hand, can you see?
How do you pronounce ऋ ṛi? This is easy, it’s just like the ‘ri’ in the English word critic or riddle! Click the play button above to hear the letter pronounced! Be sure to listen to it over loads and loads to make sure you get the pronunciation perfect!
As a little side note, the letter ऋ ṛi is only ever found in words with Sanskrit origin, Sanskrit being like the 'Latin’ of Hindi. It’s not a very common letter, probably the least common of all vowels! But that’s no excuse to not learn it! Ready to see a few example words?
ऋषि ṛishi is the Hindi word for the herb Sage, it is also a common males name in India! Click the play button above to hear our two sample words for this vowel!
Now when we want to add the vowel ऋ ṛi to a consonant we use the symbol ृ . For example in the Hindi word कृपया kṛipayaa which means 'Please’.
Take special notice here to the 'direction’ of the flick so you don’t get it confused with the vowel उ u ; ऋ ṛi in कृपया kṛipayaa - Please and… उ u in कुत्ता kuttaa - Dog. Can you see that the vowel signs flick in opposite directions? अच्छा acchaa - Good!
We’ve now learnt every single one of these vowels! Hopefully they don’t look as confusing as they did when you first saw them!
Guess what everyone, that’s the end of the vowels! You now know every single vowel in Hindi! Well done! You can now go back to the Vowels Section for a bit of a recap and some revision or you can head straight to the Consonants Section!
